Adversity

Adversity. What happens when you hit a tough time in your life? Do you give up? Do you keep fighting?

One of the things I’ve noticed is that this is the first time some have had to deal with adversity. And that is a challenge because they don’t know how to react. From a mental point of view, they are stuck and don’t know how to move forward. They may feel helpless, sad, scared, and depressed.

As a high school baseball coach for 12 years, I was fortunate to coach a group of kids that came from a good background and upbringing and for the most part able to access everything they needed for long term growth and success. The one thing that was missing? Handling adversity.

How do we teach adversity? Put ourselves in situations where we must battle and cannot give up. We would do this with our players, so they learned how to handle it in a safe environment, with lots of support, and were more prepared for when it happened to them in a situation when they we alone, without as much support.

If this is the first time you have had to deal with adversity, don’t give up. Know that there is a better tomorrow and that how you react to the situation, how you deal with your feelings, and how you decide to move forward, is entirely under your control. #adversity #dontgiveup
