Empathy

Updated: Oct 28, 2020

❤Empathy. Why is it so hard for people to be empathetic of others? I believe one of the most important characteristics of great leadership is being empathetic. Empathy is the ability to understand or feel what another person is experiencing from their point of view, placing yourself in their shoes. And the best way to be empathetic is to get to know your people, listen to them, and understand their perspective.

Why do certain leaders lack empathy? It’s because they may feel threatened, come across as soft, less powerful, and someone that can be taken advantage of. Let me be clear, you can be empathetic while still holding people accountable, having tough conversations, and making incredibly difficult decisions. The difference is how you treat people while having those conversations and making those decisions.

At the end of the day, we all want to be treated with respect and dignity and have people clearly communicate with us. Even if what they have to say isn’t what we want to hear. When you show up for your people every day, are honest with them, and treat them how you want to be treated, they will accomplish amazing things. They will give you their all, they will be dedicated, and they will trust you and your decisions, even if they don’t agree with them. #empathy
